| | | Luxury boutique in India: Making the wrists talk | | Posted Monday, January 01, 2007 1:17:29 PM by Blog57 Team | | Delhi, New York, Paris. In that order, no kidding. When legendary Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre (JLC) decided to unveil limited edition Squadra Reverso in March this year, it was Delhi it chose for the worldwide launch. The rest of the world followed. The event was also marked by the opening of JLC's first luxury boutique in India (10th in the world), making the brand's foray into exclusive retailing in the country. However, while the entire country, if not the world, was trying to figure out the ramifications of the JLC move, soon at least a dozen other top Swiss luxury watch brands, ranging from Cartier to Rado to Harry Winston, reportedly started looking at opening their exclusive boutiques in the country. And now Gucci, Corum and Audemars Piguet, among others, are also set for expanding their retail presence in India.... | |

| | | The Famous Five | | Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 1:46:23 PM by Blog57 Team | | A STITCH in time saves nine! Great, now that we have your attention by throwing that idiom (which is completely misplaced here, of course) in your line of sight, we are going to talk to you about what are possibly the five most coveted womens watches in the world. Bear in mind that timepieces targeted at women are always distinct from the mens collections in that the watches faces are smaller, they usually lack the seconds hand; and, more often than not, the date function is omitted. Naturally, there are always exceptions. 1. THE timepiece with the biggest wow factor surely has to be the La Dona de Cartier watch. This Cartier watch is stunning to behold, thanks to its almost serpentine bracelet thats mesmerising and quite unlike anything anyone would have ever seen in the annals of watch design.... | |

| | | Accent or no accent: Newspapers struggle with marks | | Posted Wednesday, October 25, 2006 11:17:55 PM by Blog57 Team | | ST. PETERSBURG -- When journalist Aly Colon began his career, he always made the same request to his editors. Could he please have an accent? Colon, a Puerto Rican native, writes his name with an accent over the second "o" to distinguish it from the less than elegant body part. When his editors said they couldn't or wouldn't add the slash to his byline, Colon began adding it by hand before the paper went to press. "My father told me that I had a family name, and that that was a name I was to grow up and honor," said Colon, "and one of the important elements of honoring that name was spelling it right." Most people with an accent in their name don't have the option of pestering the local copy editor, nor do they have Colon's passion on the issue. But with the number of Hispanics in the U.S.... | |

| | | Some contributors to breast cancer causes aren't exactly tickled pink | | Posted Sunday, October 22, 2006 11:23:42 AM by Blog57 Team | | If shopping could cure a disease, breast cancer would be history. From cosmetics counters to car dealerships, pink products are everywhere in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There's no question that cause-related marketing moves merchandise. Campbell's soup produced pink cans of tomato soup and chicken noodle soup this month and sold 7 million of them to the Kroger grocery chain, compared with the usual 3.5 million, according to Advertising Age magazine. But more and more, questions are being raised about whether such tie-ins are truly doing much good for anyone other than product makers. Campbell's will donate just 3.5 cents per pink can to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Is that enough to make buying soup a higher cause? "It's not just about raising money; it's about getting information out," says Katrina Drake, director of cause-related marketing for the Komen foundation, which works with 130 corporate partners.... | |

| | | LVMH Revenue Grows at Slowest Pace in Seven Quarters (Update1) | | Posted Thursday, October 19, 2006 3:12:58 AM by Blog57 Team | | Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) -- LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, the world's largest luxury-goods maker, had its smallest revenue increase in seven quarters as growth slowed at divisions selling monogrammed Vuitton handbags and Veuve Clicquot champagne. Third-quarter sales climbed 6.7 percent to 3.66 billion euros ($4.6 billion), according to nine-month figures released today by the Paris-based company. The median estimate was 3.68 billion euros in a Bloomberg survey of five analysts. Shares of LVMH had their steepest drop in more than a month. Sales at the company failed to grow by at least 10 percent for the first time since the fourth quarter of 2004. Growth is becoming harder to achieve after the $180 billion luxury-goods industry bounced back last year from three years of slack sales.... | |

| | | Costco Says Profit Rises, Finds Option `Imprecision' (Update4) | | Posted Sunday, October 15, 2006 7:11:08 PM by Blog57 Team | | Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Costco Wholesale Corp., the largest U.S. warehouse club, said fourth-quarter profit unexpectedly rose after revenue climbed and gasoline sales became more profitable. The company also said it found an ``imprecision'' in a 1997 option grant to top executives. Following a review of its stock- option program, Costco doesn't anticipate restating results. Net income in the 17 weeks ended Sept. 3 climbed to $355.6 million, or 75 cents a share, from $354.7 million, or 73 cents, a year earlier. Revenue including membership fees rose to $19.88 billion from $16.71 billion, Issaquah, Washington-based Costco said today in a statement. The company said profit was better than it expected in August, when it cut its forecast because of discounts for big- ticket items such as flat-panel televisions.... | |
