Solving inequality requires education reforms

With the Democrats once again in control of Congress, income inequality in the United States is likely to soon become a major public policy issue. Official government statistics indicate that the dispersion of incomes in this country has grown dramatically in recent years. However, things aren't nearly as bad as the headlines would have you believe. Income is only as valuable as the leisure and consumption that it can be exchanged for. Here, the gap between the rich and the poor is much smaller than traditional income statistics would indicate. Think of your favorite consumer good. It likely comes in both a high and low-end version and there probably isn't a whole lot of difference in functionality between these two versions. Wristwatches are a classic example....

I've always had a soft spot for Casio. As a kid, I got a Casio Space Invaders watch for Christmas - saw me through an entire year of classroom boredom. And they're still making interesting watches now, including this new High Performance Collection, based loosely around motorsport. Their most notable feature is the Wave Ceptor atomic timing in the top-end models. This means they update continuously via radio signals from the UK and Germany - with the signals being accessible from anywhere in Western Europe. The models featuring Wave Ceptor are the WVQ-550E-1AVER and WVQ-560DE-1AVER. They also feature a light, dual time, date display, daily alarm, 1/100th second stopwatch, stainless-steel casing and they're 100m water resistant. Available now, prices for watches in the range vary between £79.99 - £129.99....

Ottawa-based Kinaxis says Casio Computer Company has decided to deploy its manufacturing planning software at all its key manufacturing sites in Japan and China. Casio had originally used Kinaxis software to deal with volatile demand levels in the manufacture of watches, calculators, electronic musical instruments, electronic dictionaries and label printers. It now intends to expand the software to include its digital camera, cellular phone and system equipment divisions. "There is no other more positive endorsement than a returning customer," says Randy Littleson, vice-president of marketing at Kinaxis. "Casio's objectives and vision around supply chain performance is well-aligned with that of the Kinaxis value proposition." ....

Digicams for consumers: Q&A with Thomas Ho, sales director, DXG Technology, part three

DXG Technology is typical of Taiwan's digital camera makers in that it pursues the mainstream consumer market, while recognizing the reality that high-end digital camera production is dominated by Japan. DXG is still trying to determine the exact formula it needs to pursue between a brand, distribution-channel and OEM/ODM business model, but the company is now capable of shipping 250,000 cameras a month and claims to be offering one of Taiwan's most advanced DV cameras. DigiTimes.com recently had the opportunity to speak with Thomas Ho, sales director at DXG Technology, about DXG's progress and product offerings, and the state of the digicam industry generally. Ho can foresee a time when Taiwan and Japan are partners more than competitors, and Taiwan is turning out 50% of the world's cameras....

Suspected militants want to buy Casio : police

Violence continues on Monday in Yala as two men were gunned down while buying Durians. Copies of the watches were distributed to the vendors during a meeting with the police in July, a Songkhla vendor said. "At the meeting police said that only genuine digital Casio watches could be used in making bombs. The fake ones cannot be used," the vendor said. Songkhla police chief MajGeneral Worapong Shewpreecha revealed at the weekend that suspected militants in the three restive southernmost provinces - Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala - had been coming to Songkhla's KimyongSantisuk Market to buy mobile phones and watches, both of which are important components in making bombs. The suspected militants bought large amounts of mobile phones and watches of the same brand, prompting suspicious vendors to report the purchase to the police....

Airplanes remain target of choice for terrorists

Thursday's alleged foiled liquid-explosives plot in Great Britain was a vivid reminder that despite all the increased aviation security since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, blowing one or more of the giant silver birds from the sky remains one of the surest ways to sow horror among millions. The shutting down of Heathrow Airport outside London and the cancellation of flights in scores of world capitals showed that even when a plot is blocked, its revelation can cause havoc for days by disrupting travel plans - and raising the specter of future attacks. "Airplanes captured the imagination of the terrorists both for symbolic and operational reasons," said Brian Jenkins, a RAND research-center analyst and author of a new book on combating terrorism. "They were symbols of nations and symbols of national policy when other targets were heavily guarded." Terrorists of various political stripes attacked passengers and commandeered planes through much of the 1970s....

Okay, so it won't give you turn-by-turn directions, but the Casio GPR-100 GPS watch will keep track of how fast and far you've traveled when you're on a run or otherwise zipping around the place. And, as it uses the GPS signal, it should be accurate to within a few thousandths of a second. The Google translation version of the specifications of the watch are here. – Richard Baguley Casio GPR-100 Watch [MobileWhack] ....
