| Time keeps ticking away | | Posted Monday, March 12, 2007 3:15:18 PM by Blog57 Team | | Jeff Kohl is a baseball fanatic. And a stickler for time. So the owner of the diamond gallery on North Seminary Street that bears his name said he was excited by the prospect of daylight-saving time. "It doesn't get dark so early," Kohl said Thursday afternoon. "That means the sun stays up longer and we get more daylight in the evenings. That means more baseball." But Kohl forgot one small detail. "Wait, when do we move the clocks up this year?" Kohl asked. When he learned daylight-saving time has been moved up three weeks and starts at 2 a.m. Sunday morning, he groaned. Then he laughed. "I forgot they moved it up," Kohl said. "That means I'll be setting watches and clocks first thing Monday morning. That'll take forever." Kohl's Diamond Gallery offers a selection of close to 200 watches and a couple dozen clocks.... | |

| | | The Businessman | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 7:34:58 PM by Blog57 Team | | SAN BERNARDINO - Bud Ammon is hard-bitten and unflappable. He has to be, otherwise he'd never survive selling gold, jewelry and trinkets amid liquor stores, homeless shelters and cheap motels. Ammon plies his trade in tough territory. Fifth and G streets, where Ammon has survived for about a quarter century, is the heart of the city's struggle against blight, poverty and crime. The name Ammons Diamond & Coin Gallery is inadequate to describe the buying, selling, collecting, trading and prattling that goes on there. It has been one of his store's best years in a decade, but it may also be one of its last. The City Council in March approved financing for up to $36 million in bonds for Mayor Pat Morris' plan to buy and clear 22 properties in the Fifth and G streets area. Ammons Diamond is one.... | |

But that's how much time the average person spends waiting in traffic. You could get to work faster if the state would just open up two lanes of freeway they've already constructed. .... | |

| | | Charriol Opens Third Boutique, Vegas on Tap | | Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 1:54:46 PM by Blog57 Team | | Placing its first U.S. store in a laid-back California locale worked out so well for Charriol that the Swiss fine jewelry and watch brand decided to do it again. Charriol last month opened a 1,000-square-foot boutique, the company's third in the U.S., at Fashion Island, an open-air shopping center in Newport Beach. The store marks a return to Charriol's retail roots in California, where it opened a La Jolla store in 1994. "Newport Beach and La Jolla embody who we are," said Ori Zemer, vice president of Charriol USA. "The reason why we picked Fashion Island is really because it is a lifestyle center and Charriol is a lifestyle." With help from Robinson Hill Architecture, based in Costa Mesa, Calif., the Fashion Island location's look was tweaked slightly from Charriol's La Jolla and Atlanta stores.... | |

| | | Hip-hop moguls teach finance | | Posted Monday, October 30, 2006 11:44:54 AM by Blog57 Team | | In an odd pairing of music and message, the world of hip-hop music -- known for urging the kind of conspicuous consumption characterized by platinum chains, oversized watches and diamond-encrusted gold teeth -- is entering the unlikely realm of financial advising. Marquee names in hip-hop, such as Toronto-born Lil' X, will be delivering lessons in personal banking, vehicle financing, repairing bad credit and understanding credit scores as part of a program that targets at-risk urban youth by using the people to whom they are most likely to listen. Back to Entertainment Listen to the FP Investing rap Full Business & Finance coverage "Hip-hop itself doesn't promote the best financial awareness," concedes Lil' X, a rap video director and panelist at Canada's first-ever Get Your Money Right Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment, which is being held at Toronto's Ryerson University.... | |

| | | Online sweepstakes fans smile as goods are delivered | | Posted Thursday, October 19, 2006 3:14:56 PM by Blog57 Team | | Jenny Goedker's mailbox is a 300-foot walk from her front door, but each step of the way is filled with anticipation. That's not because she's excited about a handful of bills and junk mail, but because every day brings the possibility of a prize stuffed inside the square lockbox outside her New Smyrna Beach apartment. Goedker, a 27-year-old single mom, is an avid sweeper who spends at least two hours each day at online-sweepstakes.com, an information and message board Web site featuring a categorized, searchable directory of current sweepstakes and contests. "When I open my mailbox and see it stuffed with things, I get this rush. There are prize wins in there all the time," Goedker said. A sweepstakes site member since October 2005, she pays $30 for a one-year subscription -- a cost she easily recoups in prizes, she said.... | |
