GLAZER GOOD, ABRAMOVICH BAD

The laughable Stuart Mathieson in The MEN with some utterly scandalous drivel on how Abramovich may be helping the Glazers become accepted. 'Sir Alex Ferguson and his side may not be the only Old Trafford winners from the possible meltdown at Chelsea - the Glazers may also earn some brownie points into the bargain. When Russian oil billionaire Roman Abramovich wiped out Chelsea's 80m debt in June 2003 and let managers Claudio Ranieri and then Jose Mourinho dip into the contents of his vast wallet almost everybody in football wanted a sugar daddy. The richest man in Russia, and the 11th richest in the world, with an estimated fortune of around 40bn and prepared to bankroll the building of a successful side, seemed ideal. Smashing any football transfer record was going to be a drop in the ocean for someone awash with that kind of dosh....

More Tracking Shots

The nameless recluse at the center of this noirish thriller, written and directed by the late Argentine filmmaker Fabin Bielinsky ( Nine Queens), is a mass of contradictions. An epileptic taxidermist with a photographic memory, he is so emotionally detached from the world around him that he never smiles and barely speaks, yet he harbors a pronounced superiority complex. He shrinks from guns and hunting but watches impassively as men are shot dead. Convinced he can commit the perfect robbery, the taxidermist takes advantage of a criminal opportunity that soon spirals out of control. A hypnotic unease hangs over the film, due partly to Checco Varese's widescreen lensing, which dwarfs the characters against their bucolic but menacing woodland surroundings; partly to the constant hum of Lucio Godoy's murmuring piano-driven score; and partly to the unsettling central performance of Ricardo Darn as a character both off-putting and sympatheticand impossible to read....

Savage Love

When I assured Dreger that small-dicked readers of Savage Love have high self-esteem, great nonpenetrating technique, and more wives and mistresses than they can shake their micropenises at, she came through with one tragic example of self-enhancement: men injecting petroleum jelly directly into their penises.“Nonsterile petroleum jelly," Dreger adds. “Some of the guys ended up so scarred, surgeons had to basically cut up their penises and rebuild them. And a rebuilt transmission may function a lot like a new transmission, but the male organ is not a transmission."I met a kind, funny, attractive man. The problem is his penis is pretty small. I spent the past two years with a well-endowed ex and it's hard to be satisfied now that I'm not being “filled up." How do I broach the subject of using toys without hurting his feelings? I want to bring my silicone friends into the bedroom! ....

Turmoil lingers for owner of store robbed in city

John Gider was standing behind a counter in his jewelry store, chatting with a customer on a hot August afternoon when two masked men pushed through the front door, pulled a bed sheet off a shotgun and raised the barrel at them. In a string of obscenities, the men ordered Gider and the customer face-down on the floor between two display cases. One robber held the shotgun and stood over Gider and his customer, while the other started smashing the jewelry cases and collecting everything inside necklaces, watches, coins and bracelets. The man with the shotgun moved the barrel, pressing it first to Gider's head, then the customer's. "I could see from the corner of my eye that gun barrel going back and forth," Gider said. The barrel swung back to Gider's head as the first robber demanded the combination to a safe in the store....

Ghost Has His Own Theater Seat

NEW PORT RICHEY - The ghost in the balcony of the Richey Suncoast Theatre has a preference for seat BB 1. Charlie Skelton, president of the theater's board of directors, has never seen the apparition. But for at least the past 10 years, he's heard the accounts. Young people, mostly, swear they have seen a man occupying the aisle seat in the upper right side of the balcony. He just watches. He has never paid for a ticket. Most have taken to referring to him as Willard, as in Willard Clark. Clark has been dead for more than 20 years. A plaque on the front of the Grand Boulevard building, dedicated in June 1982, honors him as "Mister Theatre" and a patron of the arts. Some patrons who have heard the ghost stories seek out Clark's favorite seat....

BYU Changes Golfer's Life

Danny Summerhays paced back and forth across the 18th green. It was the final round of the Ping/Golfweek Preview Tournament. Facing a long putt for birdie, Summerhays was uneasy. He called his coach, Todd Miller, over and asked for some advice. Miller told him he had been locked in all day and he was not going to tell him a thing. Summerhays certainly had been "locked in" the entire day. He barely missed that final putt, but still finished the round with an even 60, a new course record. The record-breaking performance is just one in a string of stellar performances by the junior golfer. "He [Summerhays] is very good at getting it done no matter what he's feeling like or what the conditions are," Miller said. A high level of performance is nothing new for Summerhays; he has been golfing at an extremely high level most of his life....

Cavs hoops tabbed 8th in ACC

GREENSBORO, N.C. - After last season's ACC Media Day, Dave Leitao should have jotted down the names and addresses of the few hundred journalists in attendance so that he could send them gold watches for Christmas - or at least some gift certificates to Five Guys. In the preseason poll, the media picked Leitao's squad to finish dead last in the 12-team conference. It wound up being the perfect motivational tool for the first-year Virginia coach. "That fueled fire to the team," said Virginia point guard Sean Singletary. "Sometimes being picked last is the best thing." This season, Leitao will have to find a new way to rally his charges. Virginia, which finished in a three-way tie for seventh in the ACC last year, was picked to finish eighth at the league media day on Sunday....

City police responded to a burglary call in the 1400 block of Regent Street after they received a call from a neighbor who saw two unidentified men enter a nearby house. Police said the neighbor told them the men drove up to the front of the house in one car, and one man walked around to the back of the house. A few minutes later he opened the front door from the inside and asked the other man to come in. Soon thereafter, police said, the neighbor saw both men leave the house with two bags under their arms and a puppy. When the homeowner returned, police said, he found that his 10-week-old puppy was missing, as well as a silver dollar and six $2 bills that he had framed and hung on his basement wall. Severna Park Fake trooper A man claiming to be a state trooper swindled a Severna Park businessman out of $295, county police said....

Fight youth crime; join local crime watches

I was appalled by the senseless attack on Craig Todd and his friend and neighbor and our Mayor "Doc" Martinelli. The young men involved in this ruckus, regardless of whether they welded the weapon, should be held accountable for the injuries to these two men. We went unsupervised to high school sporting events as young teens, hung out with friends at thepizza joint and even got into verbal skirmishes with opposing schools. continued below ....
