Victims applaud Net scam sentence

EBay trader Brian Bell never got the Rolex watches he ordered two years ago, but he is pleased with the Christmas present a judge delivered last week: Michael Deppe was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in federal prison for swindling Bell and others in cyber schemes totaling more than $500,000. "That accurately reflects the seriousness and longstanding nature of Deppe's conduct," said Adam Bookbinder, the assistant US attorney who prosecuted the case. Deppe, 22, already has served 13 months, which will be credited toward the sentence. US District Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV pronounced the sentence in a Worcester courtroom last week, nearly three years after charges in the case were first lodged. The sentence covers Deppe's conviction on charges stemming from scams dating back to March 2003....

Mayors Jewelers, a South Florida luxury dealer for nearly 100 years, has decided it's time to dazzle the world. Officials with Birks & Mayors Inc., the Canadian parent company of Tamarac-based Mayors, are working to build an international brand that could someday be synonymous with the industry's crème de la crème -- Tiffany's and Cartier. Birks & Mayors President and CEO Tom Andruskevich says the company has set a high bar for bringing creativity and innovation to its products and stores. Tiffany & Co. represents Park Avenue glamour, he said, and Cartier is a symbol for European chic. "We want Birks to stand for international elegance," said Andruskevich, who was in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday evening for a Swiss watches event at The Galleria store....

PETER MANDELSON will appeal directly to China?s business and political leaders this week to remove a series of ?unfair? barriers to European companies, as he tries to bring about a change in trade relations between the European Union and the People?s Republic. The growth in counterfeiting and technology theft, hidden state subsidies and China?s reluctance to open up government procurement are putting relations and investment at risk, the European Trade Commissioner will tell his Chinese counterparts. ....

There was enough bling at the Hilton Garden Inn near the Halifax International Airport to make any wannabe gangsta swoon. The hotel was the site of the Heritage Auctioneers International precious-gem auction yesterday, with stones and watches from bankruptcies, estate sales and private consignment available to the highest bidder. Russ, a retired real-estate developer from Head of St. Margarets Bay who paid more than $26,000 for five items, said coming to the auction was his idea of recreation. "It's having a good time," he said. For obvious reasons, he did not want his full name used. Russ was the auction's biggest spender, buying a custom-designed diamond sapphire necklace worth $67,500 for $12,000, bringing applause from the other gem enthusiasts....

Cognac Is Newest Weapon in Fight to End North Korea Atomic Push

Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- The United Nations is hitting Kim Jong Il where it hurts, cutting off trade in the luxury goods favored by the North Korean dictator and his entourage. Kim, his family and members of North Korea's ruling class fancy Mercedes-Benz cars, Hennessy cognac and French wines, says Michael Breen, author of ``Kim Jong Il: North Korea's Dear Leader.'' They buy the goods abroad and bring them back to a country locked in poverty where annual per capita income is $914. ``The idea is to punish the leaders and not the people,'' says Jean-Baptiste Mattei, a spokesman at the French Foreign Ministry in Paris. ``It's a way to hit the nomenklatura, who are the only ones who can travel abroad and consume these goods.'' The UN Security Council included the ban on luxury goods in an Oct....

[Opinion] Beware of Kim Bearing Gifts

I think the North Korean population has been losing average height and weight over the years and maybe this will be a little diet for Kim Jong Il, John Bolton, U.S. Ambassador to U.N., said after the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution condemning North Korea`s nuclear test. The resolution calls for a ban on all trade in luxury goods, including expensive cooking ingredients. Even during the so called arduous march, when millions of his people starved to death, North Korean leader Kim enjoyed dainties of all lands and seas with top quality cognac and wine which even absolute monarchs or emperors would have had difficulties in having. Kim even has Japanese, French and Italian cooks who have been preparing dishes like shark`s fin soup everyday for Kim. High-ranking officials of the army and the party have also been apple-polishers of the table....
