| LED Calculator Watches: A Brief History | | Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 1:17:59 PM by Blog57 Team | | Before the Hamilton Pulsar (once thought to be the first calculator watch), a gift giving advertisement in the June 1975 issue of Playboy magazine included the Calcron LED Wrist Calculator (pictured left). One of the most collectible, only 50,000 of Hewlett Packard's 1977 HP-100 (pictured center) were made, of which about half were purchased by a Saudi prince. That same year, Sinclair introduced their DIY kit that didn't include a watch function (pictured right) and between 1976-78 Hughes Aircraft Company produced a similarly bulky piece that made appearances on Battlestar Gallactica. Since then, the 80's brought LCDs and every imaginable company produced LCD calculator watches. Go here for more details and images. by Watchismo. .... | |

| | | COOL HUNTING | | Posted Wednesday, October 04, 2006 1:20:43 PM by Blog57 Team | | The past few years have been an interesting time in watchmaking (granted only on the haute end of the stick), but nevertheless, innovators like Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner of Urwerk are breathing inspired fire with their 103 series and the Opus 5. The platinum 103.05 (pictured), an edition limited to 50, has orbiting satellites that align with the bottom arc of minutes to tell the time. Details like the acid yellow numbers (which glow blue in the dark) and the deco styling of the case are the hallmarks of these younger independent visionaries creating remarkable timepieces that both draw on the past and push forward into the future—a long overdue relief for the aesthetic stagnation witnessed in modern watches since the eighties. by Watchismo TAGS: Accessories (97), Fashion (286), Limited Edition (100), Watches (15), .... | |
