Tick tock in style

Ill be the first to admit that when it comes to being on time, Im usually not. Be somewhere at 9? How about 9ish? As the sign on my computer says, Im the perpetually late girl. This drives my husband crazy. To him, on time is five minutes early. It runs in the family; his parents are the same way. My family, on the other hand, has the same relaxed attitude about time that I do. Well get there when we get there, and never a minute early. (My parents, I as I discovered when I stayed at their place last week to dog-sit, have one clock in their house, which doesnt even work properly.) Oddly enough, I love watches and clocks. So I took a little time to shop to see what I could find. Without numbers, its kind of hard to tell what time it is on this pendulum wall gear clock by Kikkerland, ($99 at Zandbroz), but thats why its perfect for me....

A whole-bean coffeemaker developed by MSN Direct and Melitta gives you a morning weather report without having to turn on a TV or computer. The Melitta Smart Mill & Brew Programmable Coffee Maker, which hit stores Thursday, has an FM receiver that works with MSN Direct's data service. The latest gadget using Microsoft's Smart Personal Objects Technology (SPOT), the coffeemaker displays regional information on the current weather, daily forecast, chance of rain, and sunrise and sunset times. Microsoft has been touting SPOT for years, promising that it would be used in all types of devices, from refrigerator magnets to consumer electronics to, yes, coffeepots. For the most part, though, the technology has thus far shown up only in watches, which have been far from a mainstream retail success....

Survivor South Africa: Panama hits local TV screens this week, and pay television channel M-Net has created its "biggest ever website" to accompany the first South African version of the hit reality franchise, giving fans a whole new way of interacting with the show. Designed to showcase the capabilities of broadband, www.mnet.co.za/survivor will feature exclusive video content, rich media ad formats and a Survivor fantasy league that will allow viewers to play along with the game. "There is only so much you can fit into a one-hour television show," M-Net new media head Jason Probert said in a statement. "But there is so much other footage that we know viewers will want to see that we have created a broadband site that will feature almost 60 minute's worth of unseen video each week." The most innovative aspect of the website, however, is iBurst Fantasy Survivor, which lets viewers play along with the show from the comfort of their homes by picking a team of their favourite Survivors and "immersing themselves in the triumphs and tragedies each one faces." Playing Fantasy Survivor also puts players in line for giant giveaways, including four Hyundai cars, Tissot watches and wireless broadband connectivity from iBurst....

Watches are going out: cellphones taking over as timepieces
Posted Saturday, September 09, 2006 1:42:50 PM by Blog57 Team
Ask graphic designer Parker Weintz the time and he doesn't look to his wrist, he pulls a cellphone out of his pocket -- and he's not alone. The proliferation of cellphones, with their list of extra features, has had the knock-on effect of eliminating the need to wear a wristwatch unless it is to make a fashion statement. Weintz, 37, said he recently abandoned his trusty Swiss Army watch and now relies on his phone to tell time. "The time is right there," said Connecticut-based Weintz as he drew a palm-sized cellphone from his shorts pocket. "And it's all around us in this digital age. Plus, if I see a chick I like on the street, I can ask her the time (with no watch on his wrist)." U.S. watch sales, which have been on the decline since 2001, fell 4.9 percent in 2005, according to a new market research study....

Survivor SA site to offer extra footage
Posted Thursday, August 31, 2006 1:14:21 AM by Blog57 Team
According to Carl Fischer, head of M-Net Original Productions, www.mnet.co.za/survivor should feed Survivor fans' desire for extra information about the show. "The production team generated a lot of excellent footage for Survivor South Africa, but the show can only be 60 minutes long. With that in mind, we've decided to make at least an hour of extra, unseen footage available on the website each week." The website will house, amongst many other things, a video gallery featuring scenes not seen in the show, as well as exclusive interviews with the Survivors before, during and after the game. The broadband site will feature almost an hour's worth of unseen video each week. The photo gallery will also feature hundreds of photos from each episode, and viewers will be able to win prizes from Incredible Connection by creating the wittiest caption for each week's Freeze Frame caption competition....
